About the role
Role Overview
HubSpot is hiring a Principal Software Engineer (Frontend) – Design Systems to lead the technical direction for Trellis, HubSpot’s next-generation design system and component library. This is a deeply hands-on role focused on frontend craft, design quality, and ensuring the design system accelerates product engineering teams.
What You’ll Do
- Drive the evolution of Trellis during HubSpot’s 2026 UI modernization and shape the end-to-end product experience.
- Partner with Trellis and product teams to deliver a component library with a high visual bar (beautiful, fast, consistent, intentional).
- Define an accessibility capability model (controls, toggles, patterns) aligned to user needs.
- Build internal tooling to test and iterate on theme and style changes at scale.
- Build migration tooling to move Canvas apps to Trellis using codemods, automated refactoring pipelines, and coding-agent workflows.
- Make practical decisions on the component library API and abstractions for engineers and designers.
- Use coding agents to ship production code and lead complex initiatives end-to-end.
- Mentor Staff and Senior engineers and drive frontend thought leadership across the organization.
- Align frontend direction with the product roadmap in partnership with engineering leads, PMs, and UX.
What We’re Looking For
- 14+ years of software engineering experience, with Principal-scope impact.
- Deep expertise in React, TypeScript, and modern JavaScript frameworks/architecture.
- Experience with modern design system tooling and libraries, specifically BaseUI and StyleX.
- Experience developing and shipping a production design system used at scale.
- Hands-on builder mindset: write, debug, review, ship, and iterate with feedback.
- Fluency with AI coding agents and understanding of how they change frontend development at scale.
Nice-to-Haves / Implied Strengths
- Experience with design system theme deployment infrastructure (notably Cloudflare Workers).
- Proven ability to lead migration efforts and large-scale refactoring/code transformation pipelines.
