About the role
Role overview
Principal Product Designer on The News App team, shaping how millions of readers experience The New York Times on iOS and Android. You’ll lead creation of highly crafted, intuitive, and accessible interfaces that improve navigation, discovery, engagement, and subscriber retention.
You will work as an individual contributor within The Times Product Design organization, partnering cross-functionally and influencing product strategy through design.
Responsibilities
- Identify opportunities to evolve the news app product with senior cross-functional partners, advising on how design shapes product strategy.
- Champion new feature implementation with a user-centered perspective.
- Establish practices that enable faster iteration, learning, and high-impact launches.
- Drive culture change to increase trust, diversity, and belonging within a mission/function.
- Guide growth of high-performing individual contributors through collaboration and mentorship.
- Represent design work to company leadership and advocate for the craft/process of product design.
- Contribute to product design rituals, including participation in hiring for design roles.
- Support and demonstrate commitment to journalistic independence and the company mission.
Basic qualifications
- Portfolio demonstrating 10+ years of user-centered design and a clear design process from discovery through finished work.
- 10+ years designing digital web/app products, interactive products, or tools.
- Understanding of iOS and Android best practices.
- Proficiency with design/prototyping tools such as Figma and Play (or Cursor).
- 10+ years facilitating alignment via workshops, brainstorms, and cross-functional collaboration.
- Ability to break down large challenges into smaller decisions framed as trade-offs (e.g., time vs. scope).
- 10+ years working with data and qualitative research teams to inform decisions.
- 10+ years creating compelling narratives to communicate with non-designers (customers, partners, stakeholders).
Preferred qualifications
- Demonstrated visual design expertise: type hierarchy, layout, and design systems.
- Experience leading/conceptualizing large solutions while aligning users and stakeholders.
Reporting line
- Reports to the VP of Product Design.
Location / work arrangement
- Remote position (HQ listed as New York, NY; remote for USA).
