About the role
Role overview
Join Gusto as a Principal Product Designer (full-remote). You’ll lead AI design across the platform as a senior individual contributor—setting the interaction model, UX principles, and product direction for AI.
Missions / Responsibilities
- Define and evolve the UX vision for Gus, Gusto’s conversational AI assistant, and for AI experiences across the platform.
- Lead and deliver AI initiatives (level 1) from early concept through launch and iteration.
- Create scalable AI interaction patterns and design principles that other teams across Gusto can adopt.
- Partner closely with senior Product and Engineering leaders to develop key AI features.
- Shape the end-to-end user experience for LLM-driven conversational workflows, with a strategic and hands-on approach.
Requirements
- Ability to set a long-term UX vision for AI and translate it into shipped products that improve how small businesses get work done.
- Technical fluency collaborating with AI engineers; understands concepts such as:
- retrieval, context management, latency, and model reliability
- translating these into robust UX decisions
- Proven AI product impact: experience shipping LLM-driven product experiences to production with measurable outcomes (adoption, efficiency, trust).
- Strategic product influence: have defined UX direction at a portfolio/company level and influenced roadmap, scope, and sequencing with senior PM and Engineering.
- Builder mindset: prototype, ship, and iterate—focused on customer impact.
- Systems-level thinking: design complete AI workflows (not just chat UI), and speak to failure modes, guardrails, user control, and transparency.
- Organizational leadership: improve team ways of working via coaching, setting standards, and cross-functional partnerships.
Nice-to-haves
- Not explicitly stated.
