About the role

Role overview

Join Microsoft’s Industry Solutions Engineering (ISE) team as a Principal Product Design Specialist. You’ll define product needs from user insights, ideate and define solutions, and create design concepts and specifications that optimize the emotional and functional user experience across products, software, devices, or services.

You’ll collaborate with a cross-functional group of software engineers, technical program managers, and data scientists, working directly with strategic, high-impact customers and their engineers to build innovative, cloud-based solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Define and drive design quality: lead interactions with teams, drive QA, and push the design agenda forward.
  • Produce visual design deliverables: lead creation of visual designs and oversee a variety of design documents.
  • Turn scenarios into interaction designs: create and improve interaction models to enhance overall product UX.
  • Act as a liaison between users and products; guide teams to improve UX across product stages.
  • Lead cross-disciplinary collaboration across design and development.
  • Influence stakeholders by telling a compelling product story and securing buy-in.
  • Partner on feature definition with creative teams, program managers, and developers.
  • Guide others: provide mentorship and clarity to stakeholders; contribute to team effectiveness.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Industrial Design / Product Design / HCI / UX / Interaction Design (or related) and 6+ years experience in product or service design.
    • OR Bachelor’s degree in the same fields and 8+ years experience.
    • OR equivalent experience, demonstrated via product/service design and/or design thinking.
  • Demonstrated experience using design thinking to solve problems (implied by the equivalent-experience option).

Nice-to-haves (implied by scope)

  • Ability to work with varied technologies beyond Microsoft.
  • Experience collaborating with software engineering and technical program teams.
  • Experience contributing to open source and working across customer/product ecosystems (mentioned in overview).
