Principal Machine Learning Engineer (Gen AI)

Role overview

As a Principal Machine Learning Engineer (Gen AI) at Workday, you will develop production-grade GenAI/agentic solutions that modernize financial planning. You’ll lead the design and delivery of AI agents and integrate secure, scalable AI capabilities into Workday’s core Adaptive Planning features.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop AI agents that improve productivity and decision-making in financial planning.
• Integrate agentic capabilities into Adaptive Planning, enabling smart automation for FP&A users.
• Own the end-to-end AI development lifecycle, from problem framing to continuous improvement.
• Partner with engineers and product managers to ship AI features to production.
• Build and integrate secure, reliable, and scalable AI frameworks and models.

Requirements

• 8+ years of Object-Oriented Programming in Java.
• 8+ years with Python for numeric libraries, shipping secure production ML code and models.
• 2+ years experience with machine learning/deep learning frameworks or AI agent frameworks.
• 10+ years experience in a data science/ML or related software development team.
• Strong product mindset and ability to deliver high-quality practical solutions.
• Extensive experience with GenAI, including LLMs, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), and transformers.
• Experience with cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP), Docker/containerization, and ETL/data pipelines.
• Experience across the ML pipeline: specification, data collection & labeling, model development, validation, deployment, and monitoring.
• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, etc.).

Nice to have

• PhD or MS in a relevant field.
• Publications in machine learning research.
