Principal Frontend Engineer, Co-Experience

Role Overview

Principal Frontend Engineer (Co-Experience) on Roblox’s Communication team. You will define how hundreds of millions of users talk, hang out, and stay connected—across chat, voice, and video—in both traditional UI and immersive 3D environments.

Responsibilities

• Lead technical strategy across multiple pods for the Communication surface (chat, voice, video, and formats not yet built).
• Architect and design empowering systems and APIs that let Roblox creators add rich social features to their worlds.
• Own projects end-to-end, from comprehensive technical plans and architecture through launch, iteration, and measurable impact.
• Act as technical lead for cross-functional initiatives with product and design, plus frontend and backend engineers.
• Shape engineering culture and standards across the Communication team and improve review/ship practices across the org.
• Stay hands-on: write code and review code (principal engineers actively develop the platform).
• Mentor and grow senior engineers, remove roadblocks, and help teams execute at high quality.

Requirements

• 8+ years of frontend or client engineering experience (11+ years without a CS/related degree).
• Strong expertise building complex UIs and close partnership with Product and Design.
• Experience leading consumer real-time audio/video calling at scale (e.g., WhatsApp, Google Meet, FaceTime, Discord, or similar), with understanding of reliability, latency, and trust constraints.
• Leveraged AI for high-velocity execution and used AI-assisted development tools to prototype quickly and ship concepts to production.
• Proven technical leadership, including mentoring senior engineers into independent technical leaders.
• Ability to write clear, actionable technical design docs that hold up in architecture reviews.
