About the role
Role overview
Principal Engineer - UI (Reports to Director of Engineering) in Pittsburgh, PA. You will act as the “Technical North Star” for American Eagle’s web platform—bridging legacy systems with a modern Next.js future while setting global architecture standards and raising engineering delivery quality.
Responsibilities
- Drive architectural evolution: Lead a multi-year modernization strategy for AE.com, transitioning from legacy Ember.js to an edge-ready Next.js framework.
- Manage hybrid technical states: Design interoperability layers so legacy and modern codebases coexist with zero customer impact.
- Own the web technical foundation: Define and maintain an enterprise Web Boilerplate and core libraries, including consistency across state management, rendering patterns, and integration with the AEO Design System.
- Lead AI-augmented engineering: Integrate Agentic AI tools (Cursor, Gemini, Qodo) into the SDLC to automate testing and increase “Mean Time to Contribution” for distributed teams.
- Establish technical governance: Set partner quality bar with standardized Definition of Done and 100% automated ticket gating.
- Optimize developer experience (DX): Architect local dev environments and CI/CD feedback loops to enable high-velocity, low-overhead delivery.
- Monitor and enforce performance budgets: Own the roadmap for Core Web Vitals and SEO, using Real User Monitoring (RUM) to validate architectural changes against conversion.
- Partner with Product & UX: Translate a multi-year business vision into scalable, resilient technical roadmaps.
- Champion internal opportunities: Promote efficient reuse of the web platform for additional use cases beyond AE.com.
