Principal Engineer

Role overview

Principal Engineer (hands-on, IC-focused) to lead technical excellence for The Points Guy’s transformation from a media business into a consumer product company. The role is designed for mentorship and technical leadership through proximity—no management responsibility.

Responsibilities

• Own the hardest technical problems end-to-end: architecture through shipped code.
• Set and influence technical direction for an approximately 30-person engineering org; pressure-test major decisions before committing.
• Consistently raise the engineering bar via design reviews, pairing, and code review standards.
• Make AI-assisted development a core way of working (not a side experiment) using agents and modern tooling.
• Partner with the SVP of Engineering and engineering managers as a technical thought partner while remaining an IC.
• Bring outside industry perspective and help update team ways of working that have become stale.

Requirements

• Many years of experience building and shipping consumer products at scale; must still write code weekly.
• Demonstrated ability to up-level teams through proximity and mentorship.
• Deep fluency in the modern web stack: Next.js, React, TypeScript and strong product architecture instincts.
• Genuine conviction about AI-native development, supported by daily practice.
• Ability to influence without authority (credibility over org charts).

Compensation & benefits

• Total cash compensation range: $135,000 – $260,000 per year (base and possibly target bonus; equity may be offered separately).
• Benefits include health insurance, life/disability insurance, flexible spending accounts, holiday pay, 401(k) match, EAP, paid parental bonding, and flexible PTO (20 days annually; increases to 25 after five years).
