About the role

Role Overview

As a Principal Pipeline Engineer at Hook, you build internal systems and tools that make creative and production teams faster, smarter, and more capable. You lead end-to-end development across the full lifecycle—from problem discovery and architecture through implementation, testing, deployment, and long-term maintenance—especially at the intersection of engineering and creative practice.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain internal pipeline tools and systems (web apps, workflow automation, API integrations)
  • Work closely with Motion Designers, Art Directors, and Producers to understand workflows, gather requirements, and turn creative challenges into technical solutions
  • Develop plugins/extensions for Adobe Creative Suite (UXP/CEP/ExtendScript; After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator) and Figma, primarily using TypeScript
  • Own product areas end-to-end: discovery, UX considerations, technical design, implementation, testing, deployment, and ongoing improvement
  • Identify workflow bottlenecks and propose/execute technical solutions
  • Evaluate and recommend new tools, frameworks, and approaches for emerging/evolving needs
  • Serve as technical lead on select client projects (typically websites or small web apps); occasionally manage freelance developers
  • Document knowledge via best practices and internal guides to help the wider team level up
  • Contribute to technical strategy as a craft leader

Requirements

  • Deep expertise in TypeScript and the Node.js ecosystem (primary environment)
  • Strong understanding and demonstrated love of the full development cycle (proposal/planning → implementation → testing → optimization → deployment)
  • Proven experience building and shipping production-grade applications with strong ownership/accountability
  • Experience building/shipping plugins/extensions/integrations for creative tools (Adobe apps and/or Figma or similar)

Nice-to-Haves

  • Proficiency with Python, bash, and scripting/automation tooling
  • Experience deploying/operating applications on Google Cloud Platform, AWS, Vercel, or equivalent
  • Docker experience (containerized development and production deployments)
  • Working knowledge of relational and/or document-based databases
