About the role
Role: Principal Engineer (Hands-on)
Condé Nast is seeking a principal-level technical authority to own the architecture of the front-end stack, the web delivery/edge layer, and the standards that protect the reader experience.
Responsibilities
Front-End Architecture & Stack Evolution
- Serve as the principal technical authority for front-end architecture.
- Make foundational decisions on:
- Component design
- State management
- Rendering strategy
- Non-negotiables for the rebuilt stack
- Drive an island architecture approach, with guardrails to keep the platform coherent as it scales across brands.
- Define and defend performance budgets and SLOs (e.g., load, render, scroll, media, page transitions) and ensure the platform ships to them.
- Own measurement of real reader experience:
- Define Real User Monitoring (RUM) and Core Web Vitals instrumentation
- Ensure field capture reflects what matters
- Convert results into a continuous feedback loop for front-end and delivery health.
- Establish governance for what reaches the page:
- Surface and control the cost of third-party calls/integrations
- Set baselines and enforce what does/does not reach the reader.
Edge, CDN & Web Delivery
- Own the edge and delivery layer architecture:
- CDN strategy
- Caching
- Cloud infrastructure delivering globally
- Stay ahead of delivery trends (CDN capabilities, edge compute) and account for bot/automated traffic.
- Translate trends into architecture decisions for resilience, cost, and performance.
Technical Leadership
- Raise the technical floor via:
- Design review
- Pairing
- Documentation
- Principled decision-making
- Move into adjacent technical domains as needed to solve the problems at hand.
- Treat AI as a default part of the way work is architected, prototyped, investigated, and shipped.
- Raise standards for AI-assisted work across teams (share best practices and assess limitations clearly).
- Ideate, build, and launch agentic systems in production, including safe operation and measurement of impact.
- Act as a senior technical voice for non-technical stakeholders.
Location
