About the role

Role overview

Join ClickUp as a Principal Engineer (Collaboration Platforms). You will own the architectural vision for ClickUp’s real-time collaborative tools, ensuring ultra-low latency and high reliability for large-scale, concurrent usage. This is a hands-on role spanning architecture, problem diagnosis, and pragmatic system modernization.

Key missions / responsibilities

Define the architectural vision and establish new performance and reliability standards for real-time collaboration.
Own the core architecture enabling millions of concurrent users with ultra-low latency.
Diagnose fundamental issues, design a pragmatic path to renovate core systems, and guide execution.
Lead by influence (align stakeholders around a shared technical vision).
Act as a hands-on technical guide across frontend, backend, and infrastructure boundaries.
Transform legacy systems incrementally into scalable, maintainable platforms.

Requirements

Experience guiding via influence, with strong pragmatic communication to align diverse stakeholders.
T-shaped engineering profile: deep expertise in at least one complex domain such as real-time collaboration, media pipelines, or distributed systems.
Ability to apply deep expertise to adjacent areas.
Strong capability to solve hard, cross-team problems and catalyze engineering teams.
