About the role

Role Overview

IonQ is seeking a Principal Cloud Architect to lead the design, implementation, and governance of its cloud infrastructure. You will define the technical strategy for building and operating cloud workloads and act as the cloud technical authority across the organization.

Responsibilities

Design and document end-to-end cloud architectures covering compute, storage, networking, identity, and data services.
Define and maintain cloud reference architectures, design patterns, and technical standards for engineering teams.
Lead cloud migration efforts (assessment, planning, and execution of moving on-prem or legacy workloads).
Evaluate and recommend cloud services, tools, and third-party solutions based on technical fit, cost, and operational impact.
Implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) for repeatable, version-controlled, and auditable environments.
Build security and compliance into architectures from the start (IAM, encryption, network segmentation, regulatory adherence).
Develop strategies for high availability, disaster recovery, scalability, and performance optimization.
Establish cloud cost management and governance to optimize spend.
Provide technical leadership and mentorship; run architecture reviews and guide implementation decisions.
Stay current on emerging cloud technologies and assess value to the organization.
Partner with engineering, security, operations, and business stakeholders to align cloud strategy with organizational goals.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Engineering (or equivalent practical experience).
7+ years in IT infrastructure, software engineering, or systems architecture, including 3+ years in a cloud-focused role.
Hands-on expertise with one major cloud platform: AWS, Microsoft Azure, or GCP.
Strong knowledge of cloud networking, IAM, and security best practices.
Proven experience designing scalable, resilient, secure distributed systems.
Proficiency in Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation, Bicep, Pulumi).
Experience with containerization and orchestration (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
Solid grasp of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.

Nice to Have

Experience delivering architecture governance and mentorship across multiple engineering teams.
