Principal AI Engineer

Role overview

Join Rula as a Principal AI Engineer to shape the AI foundation for mental healthcare. You will design durable, production-grade AI systems that improve patient engagement and provider workflows, balancing architecture, applied research, and clinical realities in a regulated environment.

Key missions

• Own architecture, applied research, and real-world clinical constraints to build long-lasting production systems.
• Act as a technical multiplier by designing core platform primitives and setting standards for technical excellence and safety.
• Lead and mentor engineering teams in AI and/or ML platform domains.

Responsibilities (implied)

• Build and operate MLOps/data pipelines for continuous model improvement.
• Implement evaluation and observability to support safe deployment and iteration.
• Integrate foundation models into AI-powered products at scale.

Requirements

• 3+ years with MLOps, data pipelines, evaluation, and observability for continuous model improvement.
• 5+ years deep experience in Python plus at least one backend language (e.g., TypeScript, Java, Go).
• 2+ years building AI-powered products at scale with foundation models (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini).
• 10+ years total software engineering experience, including 7+ years with Public Cloud (AWS, GCP, etc.).
• 2+ years implementing LLM integration patterns such as RAG, agentic loops, and orchestration frameworks like LangChain or LlamaIndex.
• 5+ years designing and scaling distributed systems.

Nice-to-haves

• Familiarity with human-in-the-loop systems and clinical decision support frameworks.
• Experience designing secure, compliant AI solutions in regulated environments (HIPAA, GDPR).
• Experience building evaluation pipelines for human alignment, factual accuracy, or model interpretability.
• Contributions to open-source GenAI safety frameworks or applied research.
• Experience leading or mentoring teams in AI/ML platform domains.
