Role overview

Principal AI Engineer (hands-on technical leadership)

DrFirst is building an agentic AI ecosystem at scale. In this role, you architect and build production AI automation systems from discovery to deployment, working closely with department leaders to map workflows and ship tools that augment their work.

80% individual-contributor engineering (building)
20% servant leadership/mentorship (guiding and enabling others)

Responsibilities

Build production AI automation (80%)

Own technical implementation across department sprints
Design and build production backends connecting to enterprise systems (HRIS, ERP, CRM, finance, project management)
Create frontend experiences with secure access and auditability
Architect multi-agent systems (agent coordination, registries, workflow orchestration)
Handle enterprise integration challenges (proxies, networking, certificates)
Maintain quality via automated testing and a large test suite with visual regression
Deploy and support systems in production; diagnose issues (pods, auth, rate limits, health checks)
Improve performance (async I/O, event loop blocking fixes, CPU-bound optimization)
Partner on security needs (PII/PHI de-identification, least privilege, OAuth2)
Ship 3–5 production tools in parallel per sprint, with multiple deployments per day

Servant leadership and mentorship (20%)

Guide 2–3 engineers through code reviews and pairing
Teach department leaders to use AI tools effectively
Run discovery sessions with VPs to extract workflows and translate requirements
Communicate technical decisions clearly to executives

Requirements (what you will love / who will fit)

Senior IC who ships code daily and prefers hands-on building
Experience at Staff/Principal level or leading small teams (but you miss the day-to-day engineering)
Ability to architect multi-agent systems
Comfortable running workflow discovery sessions with senior stakeholders
Strong ability to debug OAuth2/auth flows in enterprise environments (e.g., proxies)
Can explain security requirements to non-technical stakeholders
Servant-leadership mindset: remove blockers, teach through pairing, and make stakeholders successful

Nice-to-haves / examples from the role

Built systems integrating with common enterprise platforms and identity providers
Experience with E2E/visual regression testing and CI/CD-driven deployments
Hands-on experience with Kubernetes and cloud infrastructure
