About the role
Role overview
Senior Platform Engineer (Platform & Automation) for the Automation & Integration function. You will be the senior hands-on technical authority responsible for designing, building, and operating a secure internal application delivery and automation platform used in regulated life sciences settings.
Note: This role enables AI delivery, but does not own AI use-case development (owned by the AI Hub). You will build the platforms, guardrails, and reusable capabilities that allow the AI Hub, citizen developers, and the Automation & Integration team to deliver safely.
Core responsibilities
Platform Engineering & Production Operations
- Design, build, and operate secure, scalable platform services across:
- Deployment, networking, identity-aware access, TLS/certificate management
- Container orchestration
- CI/CD
- Own delivery end-to-end: architecture → implementation → production deployment → operations/support → continuous improvement
- Set up monitoring/observability, incident response, reliability practices, and automated deployment pipelines
- Balance delivery speed with security, validation, documentation, and change-control needs of a regulated environment
Paved Roads & Reusable Engineering
- Create reference architectures, reusable templates, containerized patterns, and self-service tooling
- Develop and maintain integration layers, REST APIs, and MCP servers to safely expose approved internal tools and data to developers and AI agents
- Define and maintain engineering standards for building, deploying, securing, documenting, and supporting applications/services
Enterprise Integration
- Design and operate reliable, supportable enterprise integrations across validated systems and platforms (e.g., Benchling, Veeva, Jira)
- Translate high-value automation/integration needs into governed, production-ready solutions with business, scientific, security, and technology stakeholders
Governance & Compliance Engineering
- Operationalize SDLC, security, privacy, and GxP standards by embedding policy into platform and pipeline controls
- Implement audit-ready logging, identity/access controls, traceability, and human-in-the-loop gates for high-risk workflows
- Produce/maintain technical documentation and evidence for validation, audits, and controlled change
Technical leadership
- Lead complex platform delivery, production hardening, troubleshooting, and architectural decisions
- Mentor Platform Engineers I–II via hands-on technical review and quality improvements
- Communicate architecture, tradeoffs, risks, and roadmaps to technical and nontechnical stakeholders
Required qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Engineering or equivalent practical experience
- 7+ years in platform engineering, infrastructure engineering, DevOps, systems engineering, or software development
- 2+ years of hands-on experience building or operating AI or automation platforms (cloud general experience alone is not sufficient)
- Demonstrated end-to-end production ownership of platform/infrastructure architecture, including:
- Container orchestration, networking, CI/CD, identity and access, and security
Nice-to-haves
- Not explicitly stated in the provided text.
