Platform Architect

Role overview

You will be a technical leader and key contributor to the design, development, and delivery of Instructure’s developer portal and Platform as a Service (PaaS) products. You’ll own architectural decisions and help teams deliver scalable, reliable, high-performance platforms that improve the developer and learning experience.

Key responsibilities

• Lead architectural and technical direction for PaaS features, services, and platform components
• Drive platform architecture decisions focused on scalability, reliability, and performance
• Mentor engineering teams and foster a collaborative engineering environment
• Collaborate with Engineering leads, SRE, and other stakeholders to translate requirements into technical specifications
• Guide technical initiatives from conception through deployment, operation, and maintenance

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science/Engineering or equivalent practical experience
• 10+ years of progressive software development experience, including 3+ years in a lead or principal engineering role
• Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts to diverse audiences
• Extensive experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
• Proficiency in multiple programming languages (e.g., Ruby, Python, Java, JavaScript, Go) and familiarity with modern web frameworks
• Strong understanding of database systems (relational and NoSQL) and data modeling
• Experience with Agile development and DevOps practices
• Deep expertise designing, building, and scaling complex distributed systems
