Role Overview
The Phlebotomy Operations Manager oversees laboratory-provided phlebotomy services in outpatient care settings supported by the laboratory. This remote role (with ~30% travel) ensures high-quality specimen collection, patient safety, regulatory compliance, and a positive patient experience. You will supervise phlebotomy staff and collaborate with laboratory leadership and clinical partners to support diagnostic testing services nationally.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee daily laboratory-provided phlebotomy and operational services across client locations
- Ensure safe, accurate specimen collection, labeling, handling, and transport per lab policies and regulations
- Monitor patient flow, specimen integrity, and overall service quality
- Adjust staffing assignments and workflows to meet service needs
- Perform phlebotomy duties as needed to maintain continuity of care
- Support phlebotomy operational workflows for CKD programs and related initiatives
Quality, Compliance, and Patient/Client Experience
- Ensure phlebotomy services comply with laboratory standards, safety requirements, and applicable regulations for pre-analytic processes
- Monitor quality indicators, audit findings, incident reports, and patient feedback
- Investigate service issues/complaints and implement corrective actions with lab leadership and clinical partners
Leadership, Training, and Competency
- Supervise and develop a phlebotomy team across supported care settings
- Manage scheduling, attendance, performance expectations, and service reliability
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide coaching/counseling/corrective action
- Promote a professional, respectful, service-oriented workforce
- Manage contingency coverage plans (backup phlebotomists or designated vendors)
- Ensure staff training and ongoing competency (patient identification, infection prevention, professionalism, specimen collection techniques, and lab policies)
- Maintain training/competency documentation and provide remedial training when needed
Collaboration and Communication
- Act as the primary laboratory contact for phlebotomy-related service issues within supported environments
- Collaborate with laboratory leadership, providers, nursing representatives, patient access, and information systems
