About the role

Role Overview

People & Operations Manager to partner with leadership (reporting to the COO and working closely with the CEO, leadership team, and Board) to build and run a values-based culture and effective people operations. Own the full employee lifecycle while also leading internal operations, executive support, and board management for a small, fully remote nonprofit.

Responsibilities

HR & People Operations

  • Serve as a trusted partner to leadership; operationalize strategic vision for culture and people operations
  • Lead development and execution of the annual performance review and broader performance management infrastructure
  • Act as primary point of contact for Justworks (Professional Employer Organization/PEO)
  • Ensure compliance with state requirements and employment laws where staff are located (registrations, filings, reporting)
  • Maintain an up-to-date employee handbook and related resources, including annual trainings and internal knowledge management
  • Support professional development (identify opportunities, recommend resources/tools, track budget)
  • Plan and coordinate in-person team convenings and retreats
  • Streamline and enhance onboarding and offboarding
  • Develop, field, and analyze results from employee engagement and satisfaction surveys

Internal Operations & Executive Support

  • Implement tools and processes to improve organizational efficiency and resilience (including opportunities to incorporate AI)
  • Coordinate onboarding and education on new tools; manage coordination with internal/external stakeholders as needed
  • Support fiscally sponsored organizations and projects with administrative/operational/HR functions
  • Manage device and supply procurement for staff in coordination with IT Security partner
  • Coordinate executive travel and event logistics as needed
  • Streamline subscription payments, receipt procedures, and other admin processes with Finance
  • Manage and maintain insurance policies, renewals, and related documentation

Board Management & Governance

  • Partner with CEO/COO to facilitate consistent, meaningful Board engagement
  • Plan quarterly Board meetings (with CEO and COO)
  • Produce and distribute monthly Board updates and meeting materials
  • Manage the Board shared knowledge space and documentation
  • Support Board recruitment efforts (coordination, project management, briefing prep)

Special Projects

  • Support and/or lead special events (e.g., fundraising events) and other assigned organizational priority projects

Requirements

  • 3+ years of HR experience in a small (fewer than 20 employees), remote-first nonprofit with employees in 3+ states
  • Strong HR fundamentals including multi-state and federal employment law/compliance, performance management, and building internal culture
  • Experience working with and understanding Professional Employer Organizations (PEOs)
  • Experience interfacing with and supporting a nonprofit Board of Directors

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience planning and executing internal and external convenings/events (based on partial trailing requirement text)
