About the role
Role Overview
The People Operations Generalist owns the operational backbone of the employee experience at Expel. You’ll manage the full employee lifecycle (onboarding to offboarding) and be responsible for benefits, leave administration, HRIS, and compliance—with a strong focus on automation and building self-service to reduce tickets and queue-based work.
Responsibilities
- Own the employee lifecycle end-to-end:
- Onboarding: background check monitoring, orientation scheduling/logistics, and close coordination with IT to ensure access on day one.
- Offboarding: manage voluntary and involuntary departures and run exit interviews with care and consistency.
- Administer US benefits:
- open enrollment, new hire enrollments, qualifying life events, invoice reviews, and ongoing data audits.
- Manage leave programs:
- parental leave, FMLA, short-term and long-term disability; make them clear and easy to navigate.
- Lead HRIS administration:
- configure and maintain the HR system for accurate day-to-day needs (compensation, reporting, absence) and maintain audit-ready data.
- Own compliance reporting and audit support:
- ACA, EEO-1, SOC 2 audit support, Medicare Part D notifications, PCORI filings, and annual workers’ comp premium audit.
- Automate relentlessly / build self-service:
- treat repetitive tasks as bugs; enable employees and managers to take action without opening tickets.
- Enable managers and support employees:
- provide templates/tools/guidance for routine people processes; field requests via email/Slack accurately and on time while reducing request volume.
- Maintain the employee handbook so it stays current, useful, and accurate.
Requirements
- 4–7 years in People Operations at a senior individual-contributor level.
- Direct experience administering an HRIS (e.g., Workday or Rippling or similar).
- Benefits administration experience across medical, dental, vision, FSA, and COBRA.
- Leave administration experience including FMLA, short- and long-term disability, and parental leave.
- Familiarity with US compliance reporting: ACA, EEO-1, Medicare Part D, PCORI; experience supporting audits such as SOC 2.
Nice-to-haves
- Strong drive for process improvement, automation, and building self-service for employees and managers.
- Comfort partnering cross-functionally (e.g., with Employee Experience, Finance, and IT) as a strategic operator.
