Manager, Software Engineering

Role Overview

SmithRx is hiring a Manager, Software Engineering to lead the Tools & Frameworks team. This team acts as a force multiplier for the rest of engineering by building shared backend libraries, core backend data capabilities, and internal tooling that underpin the platform.

Responsibilities

• Lead and grow engineering talent: manage and mentor engineers (up to Staff level), build a collaborative/high-performing culture, run performance reviews, and support career development.
• Own vision and roadmap: define and execute a roadmap aligned to company goals; translate business requirements into engineering projects in partnership with product managers and stakeholders.
• Deliver and scale key initiatives, including:
  • Build and maintain a FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) translation layer
  • Decompose a monorepo, advance data federation, and establish domain event streaming where needed
• Drive architectural and operational excellence:
  • Work with Principal Engineers to design scalable, resilient backend services, APIs, and schemas
  • Identify and mitigate technical risks and address architecture deficiencies
  • Establish and maintain development and testing best practices (role text truncated)

Requirements

• Proven experience leading software engineering teams and delivering high-quality backend systems.
• Ability to balance short-term delivery with long-term scalability and operational efficiency.
• Experience architecting shared libraries, internal tooling, and backend data structures.

Nice to Have

• Background in healthcare interoperability and/or experience with FHIR integrations.
• Experience with monorepo decomposition, data federation, and event streaming architectures.
