Manager, Software Engineering

Role Overview

SmithRx is seeking a Manager, Software Engineering to lead the Tools & Frameworks team. This role manages and scales teams delivering infrastructure for core services, driving architectural excellence and operational efficiency.

Responsibilities

• Team leadership:
  • Manage, mentor, and inspire engineers (up to Staff level)
  • Build a high-performing culture focused on accountability, innovation, and excellence
  • Run performance evaluations, provide actionable feedback, and support career growth
• Strategy & execution:
  • Define the team vision and roadmap aligned with company goals
  • Partner with product managers and stakeholders to translate business requirements into engineering work
  • Lead major initiatives including:
    • Building and maintaining a FHIR translation layer
    • Decomposing a monorepo, advancing data federation, and establishing domain event-streaming where needed
  • Balance short-term delivery with long-term scalability
• Architecture & operations:
  • Work with Principal Engineers on scalable, reliable software solutions
  • Identify and mitigate technical risks and address architectural deficiencies
  • Establish and maintain development/testing best practices (text truncated)

Requirements / Qualifications

• Experience leading engineering teams and mentoring engineers up to Staff level
• Ability to define roadmaps, align priorities with stakeholders, and drive delivery of platform/infrastructure work
• Strong systems thinking focused on developer productivity, resilient/scalable service design, and reusable tooling

Nice-to-haves (implied by scope)

• Experience with healthcare interoperability concepts such as FHIR
• Experience with backend platform architecture, data federation, and event-driven systems
