Role Overview

Manager of Software Engineering (Remote)

Binary Defense is seeking a Manager of Software Engineering to build and lead a sustainable, high-performing software team. You’ll manage delivery across highly variable cycles—ranging from rapid, same-hours customer delivery to longer-term research and validation efforts—while staying hands-on at the code level.

Responsibilities

• Lead and grow engineering teams: attract, develop, coach, and retain top talent; address underperformance; ensure engineers are challenged and successful.
• Own delivery execution: set clear priorities, establish and regularly revise delivery dates, and ensure teams have adequate resources.
• Track operational performance: report engineering/operational KPIs and use metrics for data-driven decisions.
• Manage engineering backlog with technical input from leads.
• Drive system understanding and documentation: work with teams to document system design, integration points, and dependencies.
• Advocate for technical excellence: guide best practices and technical decision-making.
• Mature agile engineering practices, including:
  • CI/CD
  • automated unit testing and acceptance testing
  • TDD
  • pair programming
  • feature teams and vertical slices
  • refactoring, collective code ownership, code reviews
• Provide technical leadership: ensure standards and best practices are established, documented, and followed.
• Guide future-state architecture: ensure secure and scalable solutions aligned with the company’s architecture vision.
• Enable team self-organization.
• Maintain a customer-focused mindset across the engineering organization.

Requirements

• Degree in Computer Science / Software Engineering (or equivalent real-world experience).
• 7+ years hands-on experience architecting, contributing to code bases, and delivering customer-facing software.
• 5+ years experience managing, mentoring, coaching, and leading software engineers at multiple levels.
• 3+ years experience with AWS and/or Azure.
• Experience successfully leading distributed teams.
• Strong written and verbal communication of technical concepts.
• Ability to assess engineering skills and team productivity and drive continuous improvement.
• Strong technical background to provide credible leadership.
• Ability to evaluate complex risks/issues objectively and communicate to business stakeholders.
• Proven track record building scalable, fault-tolerant solutions.
• Broad distributed systems knowledge: OS internals concepts, concurrency, networking, distributed systems, and API development.
• Experience making incremental technical transformations while meeting business-critical roadmap objectives.
• Expert software engineering best practices and SDLC judgment (user functionality, performance, technical debt).
