About the role

Role Overview

Applied Systems is seeking a Manager, Software Engineering to lead a newly formed data engineering team supporting Applied’s most critical AI-driven initiatives. The team spans Applied’s core AMS platforms and powers the data engineering behind key products.

What You’ll Do

Lead and grow a team of engineers focused on data engineering standards and initiatives across Applied’s platforms.
Drive high-visibility, cross-functional initiatives in partnership with Product, Architecture, and Engineering leaders.
Build and standardize data engineering best practices from the ground up.
Provide hands-on technical guidance in:
- SQL optimization
- Data modeling
- GCP data/streaming technologies
Champion AI-assisted and agentic engineering workflows to improve team productivity.
Balance technical leadership with people management, including coaching and goal-setting.

What You’re Looking For

Ability to work remotely with occasional in-person attendance for meetings, offsites, and leadership events.
Advanced SQL experience in cloud data warehousing platforms (e.g., BigQuery/Snowflake), including:
- Query optimization
- Partitioning
- Data modeling
Hands-on experience with the GCP data and streaming stack, including:
- BigQuery
- Dataflow / Apache Beam
- Pub/Sub
- Cloud SQL (Postgres)
- Redis
Experience leading and coaching engineering teams, balancing hands-on work with people leadership.
Strong software engineering practices across the SDLC, including code review, source control, testing, and operations.
Track record driving adoption of AI-assisted / agentic engineering workflows.
Strong communication skills for explaining complex technical concepts to varied audiences.

Nice to Have

Familiarity with Python and Go alongside SQL.
Familiarity with GKE, Terraform (CDK), and GitLab CI/CD.
Experience with observability and monitoring tools (e.g., Datadog).
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science (or related) or equivalent experience.

Location / Work Arrangement

Candidate must reside in North America.
Remote work with occasional in-person attendance.
