Legal Counsel - Regulatory Compliance, Product and Privacy

Role Overview

Canonical is expanding its in-house legal team and is hiring a Legal Counsel / Legal Advisor focused on Regulatory Compliance, Product, and Privacy. The role supports compliance and privacy matters in the technology and enterprise software space, including evolving questions at the intersection of technology, law, and product development.

Responsibilities

• Draft and review corporate policies.
• Spearhead process change and deploy compliance controls to meet regulatory requirements globally.
• Help develop, maintain, and scale global privacy programs.
• Conduct PIAs (Privacy Impact Assessments) and ROPAs (Records of Processing Activities).
• Work with cross-functional teams to evaluate the impact of privacy/data protection laws and AI regulations.
• Provide legal support to internal stakeholders, including product teams.
• Coordinate with local counsel across multiple countries to seek and implement advice.

Requirements

• Exceptional academic record (high school and university).
• Law degree / JD or equivalent and active license to practise (or actively progressing toward it).
• Demonstrated ability to go above-and-beyond.
• Professional English with excellent drafting and presentation skills.
• Confidence to speak up, exchange feedback, and share ideas.
• Ability to thrive in a multicultural multinational environment.
• Strong organization, proactive execution, and efficiency.
• Demonstrated commercial judgment.
• Ability to travel twice a year (up to two weeks for company events).

Nice-to-Haves

• Experience in compliance, data privacy, or product development.
• Leadership and ability to influence others to adopt new ideas/practices.
• Understanding of open source community values.
• Understanding of the technology industry (silicon, data centers, PCs, connected devices, software).
• Experience working in in-house legal and/or law firm environments.
