About the role
Role overview
Lead Backend Software Engineer for the Product API team at Philo. The Product API powers most non-media interactions in the app, including show catalog access, search, recommendations, and platform integrations across web, mobile, and connected TV.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership for the Product API team: architecture input, design tradeoffs, coaching, and mentoring.
- Collaborate with product and client engineering teams to design and deliver GraphQL APIs for rich, performant user experiences.
- Own and evolve key backend subsystems such as:
- Recommendations
- Catalog
- Search
- In-app notifications
- User preferences
- Viewing history
- Collections
- Experiments
- Feature flags
- Build and maintain proxy/augmentation layers that integrate domain services.
- Drive reliability using observability, coordinate cross-team delivery, and support platform stability and clear API contracts.
- Lead by example by shipping features, triaging bugs, and managing releases to advocate for code quality.
Requirements
- Deep experience building scalable APIs, services, and platform infrastructure.
- Strong capability to drive architecture and reliability with observability.
- Experience designing platform integrations and supporting many different clients.
Nice-to-haves (implied by the description)
- Experience with GraphQL-based frameworks and dynamic client experiences.
- Familiarity with experimentation systems and feature-flag-driven delivery.
- Experience with security and privacy considerations at scale.
