Role Overview
Senior Kubernetes Engineer (Long-term Contract, Remote)
Responsibilities
- Design, provision, and manage production-grade Amazon EKS Kubernetes clusters across dev/test/prod using Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
- Architect multi-cluster, multi-AZ Kubernetes environments with high availability, fault tolerance, and workload isolation.
- Manage the full EKS/Kubernetes cluster lifecycle: provisioning, version upgrades, node group management, add-on lifecycle, and decommissioning.
- Design and implement Kubernetes networking:
- VPC CNI configuration
- Ingress controllers (AWS Load Balancer Controller)
- Service mesh
- DNS
- Implement cluster autoscaling strategies using Karpenter and/or Cluster Autoscaler, including Spot/On-Demand node pool design and cost optimization.
- Manage Kubernetes RBAC (Roles/ClusterRoles and bindings) across namespaces and teams.
- Implement IRSA (IAM Roles for Service Accounts) to grant AWS permissions to workloads without node-level credentials.
- Build and maintain Terraform IaC for EKS and supporting AWS infrastructure (VPC, IAM, ECR, EKS).
- Enforce resource governance using ResourceQuotas, LimitRanges, PodDisruptionBudgets, and PriorityClasses.
- Design and manage persistent storage (EBS CSI and EFS CSI, StorageClass configuration, and backup strategies).
- Build and maintain Dynatrace dashboards and monitors/alerts for Kubernetes health, workload performance, and infrastructure metrics.
- Collaborate with DevOps, SRE, and application teams to onboard workloads, establish cluster standards, and respond to platform incidents.
- Perform root cause analysis and resolve production incidents related to cluster infrastructure, scheduling, networking, and storage.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/IT/Engineering or related field.
- 14+ years total experience (posting states not to apply if less than 14 years).
- 7+ years overall IT Infrastructure/Cloud/Platform Engineering.
- 4+ years hands-on Kubernetes cluster administration in production.
- Strong end-to-end Amazon EKS cluster design/build/operations.
- Deep knowledge of Kubernetes networking (VPC CNI, ingress, DNS).
- Hands-on Karpenter or Cluster Autoscaler experience for dynamic node provisioning.
- Strong Terraform experience for EKS and AWS infrastructure.
- Kubernetes RBAC and IRSA experience.
- Dynatrace dashboards plus monitors/alerts experience.
- Experience with CI/CD and GitOps tooling for workload delivery.
- Linux administration and AWS core services (VPC, IAM, EC2, S3, ECR).
- Experience migrating data from Dynatrace to Datadog.
Preferred Skills
- AWS certifications (Solutions Architect/DevOps Engineer or equivalent).
- CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator).
- Python and/or Bash scripting for automation.
- Helm or Kustomize.
- Prometheus/Grafana knowledge.
- Multi-cloud/hybrid Kubernetes experience (AKS/GKE with EKS).
