About the role
Role Overview
Embedded Kubernetes & Database Migration Engineer for a remote U.S. position. You’ll help migrate a mission-critical on-prem platform to AWS using a Rehost (Lift-and-Shift) + Kubernetes modernization approach, working closely with application, cloud infrastructure, and DBA teams.
Responsibilities
Kubernetes & Application Migration
- Assist migration of Kubernetes clusters from on-prem to AWS EKS
- Modernize and rewrite Helm charts to match current Kubernetes standards and AWS EKS deployment patterns
- Implement container orchestration practices (pod scaling, resource limits, health checks)
- Establish GitOps workflows and CI/CD pipelines for Kubernetes deployment automation
- Maintain hybrid networking connectivity to on-prem hardware (barcode scanners, laser cutters, label printers) during and after migration
Database Migration & Replication
- Coordinate with the DBA team to migrate MySQL hub-spoke replication to AWS RDS
- Validate binary log replication strategy across hub and spoke databases
- Test and document read-replica promotion procedures and DR runbooks
- Preserve AWS DMS reporting replication connectivity during migration
- Ensure ongoing connectivity to downstream dependencies (Kafka, RabbitMQ, message queuing systems, and MSSQL)
Networking & Security
- Collaborate with Cloud Infrastructure to validate VPC architecture (Transit Gateway, VPC peering, Security Groups) across AWS regions
- Implement TLS/certificate management
- Configure DNS routing/records during cutover windows
- Execute and validate network preflight connectivity tests across all application dependencies prior to each cutover
- Design and document inbound/outbound Security Group rules based on port dependencies
Qualifications
- 5+ years in cloud infrastructure and application migration with hands-on AWS experience
- Strong Kubernetes expertise: cluster operations, Helm chart authoring/migration, namespace management, pod lifecycle, troubleshooting
- Hands-on AWS EKS provisioning and managed add-on management
- Proficiency in AWS networking: VPC, subnets, Security Groups, Transit Gateway, Route Tables, VPC Peering, PrivateLink
- Working knowledge of MySQL replication topologies and binary log replication; RDS/Aurora MySQL migration
- DNS management and TLS/certificate lifecycle experience (e.g., cert-manager, ACM)
- Infrastructure as Code proficiency (Terraform or AWS CloudFormation)
- Experience designing/executing migration cutover plans with rollback criteria
- Strong communication and stakeholder management
