Junior Java Developer

Role Overview

Join MTI’s engineering team as a Junior Java Developer. You’ll work in a multi-generational, production-grade Java/Spring Boot codebase, owning real features from day one in a collaborative yet autonomous environment.

What You’ll Work With

• Core Platform (Java & Spring Boot)
  • Build and maintain Spring Boot applications (REST APIs, background workers, scheduled jobs)
  • Work with Java across multiple versions within a long-lived codebase
  • Navigate and contribute to Maven and Gradle build systems
  • Read, refactor, and extend both legacy and greenfield code
• AWS Infrastructure
  • Deploy and operate services using core AWS services: EC2, ECS, Lambda, S3, RDS, SQS, SNS, CloudWatch
  • Maintain infrastructure configurations and understand cloud-native concerns (logging, scaling, IAM, networking basics)
• Supporting Technologies
  • Maintain internal Node.js applications
  • Make small updates to Python AWS Lambda functions as needed
  • Work with relational databases: SQL, schemas, and migrations

Responsibilities

• Develop, test, and deploy Java/Spring Boot features across the product
• Diagnose and resolve bugs in both new and legacy code
• Write clean, well-tested code with an emphasis on maintainability
• Deploy changes to AWS and monitor application health
• Document work (README files, runbooks, inline comments)
• Communicate progress and surface blockers proactively in an async environment
• Improve system understanding holistically, not only within your own tasks

Requirements

• Solid foundation in Java (OOP, collections, exceptions, basic concurrency)
• Familiarity with Spring Boot (or a comparable Java web framework)
• Exposure to Maven or Gradle
• SQL and relational database fundamentals
• Basic AWS literacy (have deployed/operated something in AWS)
• Comfortable working in a Linux/Unix terminal
• Strong written communication skills for async collaboration
• Self-directed, able to navigate ambiguity without constant direction

Nice to Have

• Familiarity with Node.js or Python (reading and making small edits)
• Experience with codebases spanning multiple Java versions/tech generations
• Familiarity with CI/CD tools (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, CodePipeline, etc.)
