Java Developer - Remote

Role Overview

Join a remote team as a Backend Java Developer (AI Expert) on a contract, part-time basis. You will design, implement, and continuously improve robust backend APIs, collaborating with a team focused on AI research and next-generation developer tools.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and optimize scalable REST and GraphQL endpoints.
• Implement and enforce data validation, error handling, and API security best practices.
• Plan and execute database migrations, performance tuning, and schema changes.
• Test AI-powered models in Cursor, and report findings using:
  • incident reports
  • bug traces
  • screenshots
• Participate in 4-day intensive testing bursts to assess how AI models affect real coding workflows.
• Collaborate with the research team via a dedicated Slack channel.
• Submit post-burst surveys covering model performance and developer experience.

Required Qualifications

• 3+ years of professional backend development experience with strong Java expertise.
• Proven ability building and maintaining RESTful and GraphQL APIs.
• Advanced knowledge of backend data validation, error handling, and API security.
• Hands-on experience with database migrations, performance tuning, and schema design.
• Extensive experience using AI coding tools; Cursor familiarity is highly desirable.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, especially for clear incident/bug reporting.
• Ability to thrive in fast-paced remote environments.

Preferred Qualifications

• Visible open-source contributions (e.g., GitHub activity).
• Experience designing/evaluating experimental tooling and developer workflows.
• Demonstrated enthusiasm for AI advancements in software development.
