About the role
Role Overview
Join your customer’s team as a Backend Java Developer (AI Expert) in a remote, part-time contract role. You’ll design and improve robust backend APIs and collaborate with a research team to test AI-powered models in real coding workflows.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and optimize REST and GraphQL endpoints for scalable APIs
- Implement strong data validation, error handling, and API security practices
- Plan and execute database migrations, performance optimizations, and schema changes
- Test new AI-powered models using Cursor, and submit actionable feedback (incident reports, bug traces, screenshots)
- Participate in 4-day intensive testing bursts evaluating AI impact on coding workflows
- Collaborate with the research team via Slack and propose improvements
- Complete post-burst surveys covering model performance and developer experience
Required Skills
- 3+ years professional experience as a backend developer, strong Java expertise
- Proficiency building and maintaining RESTful and GraphQL APIs
- Advanced backend expertise in data validation, error handling, and API security
- Hands-on experience with database migrations, performance tuning, and schema design
- Extensive use of AI coding tools; Cursor familiarity is highly desirable
- Excellent written and verbal communication; strong incident/bug reporting
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, confidential remote environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Visible open-source contributions (e.g., GitHub stars or contributions)
- Experience designing/evaluating experimental tooling and developer workflows
- Demonstrated enthusiasm for AI advancements in software development
