About the role
Role Overview
Join a customer team as a Java Backend Developer (AI Expert) in a remote, contract (part-time) role. You’ll design and improve robust backend APIs and collaborate with an AI research effort by testing AI-powered models and providing detailed feedback.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and optimize backend APIs, including REST and GraphQL endpoints
- Implement data validation, error handling, and API security best practices
- Plan and execute database migrations, performance tuning, and schema changes
- Test AI-powered models in Cursor, submitting actionable feedback via:
- incident reports
- bug traces
- screenshots
- Participate in 4-day intensive testing bursts to assess how AI impacts real coding workflows
- Collaborate with the research team in a dedicated Slack channel
- Submit detailed post-burst surveys covering model performance and developer experience
Requirements
- 3+ years professional backend experience, with strong Java expertise
- Proficiency building and maintaining RESTful and GraphQL APIs
- Advanced backend knowledge of data validation, error handling, and API security
- Hands-on experience with database migrations, performance tuning, and schema design
- Extensive use of AI coding tools; Cursor is highly desirable
- Strong written and verbal communication, especially for clear incident/bug reporting
- Ability to work effectively in fast-paced, confidential, collaborative remote environments
Nice-to-Haves
- Visible open-source contributions (e.g., GitHub contributions/stars)
- Experience designing/evaluating experimental tooling and developer workflows
- Enthusiasm for AI advancements in software development
