About the role

Role Overview

Join a client team as an AI-focused Backend Developer (Java Developer) in a remote, contract (part-time) role. You will design and continuously improve robust backend APIs while collaborating with AI research to test and shape next-generation developer tools.

Responsibilities

Design, develop, and optimize REST and GraphQL endpoints for scalable APIs
Implement data validation, error handling, and API security best practices
Plan and execute database migrations, performance tuning, and schema changes
Test AI-powered models in Cursor, then report findings via:
- incident reports
- bug traces
- screenshots
Participate in 4-day intensive testing bursts to evaluate how AI models affect real coding workflows
Collaborate with the research team in a dedicated Slack channel to discuss results and propose improvements
Submit post-burst surveys with insights on model performance and developer experience

Requirements

3+ years of professional backend development experience, with strong Java expertise
Proven ability building and maintaining RESTful and GraphQL APIs
Advanced knowledge of backend data validation, error handling, and API security
Hands-on experience with database migrations, performance tuning, and schema design
Strong communication skills, especially for clear incident and bug reporting
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced remote environment

Nice to Have

Open-source contributions (e.g., GitHub stars/contributions)
Experience designing or evaluating experimental tooling and developer workflows
Demonstrated enthusiasm for AI advancements in software development
Familiarity with Cursor
