Java Developer - Remote

Role Overview

Contract (part-time), Remote — Join a customer team as an experienced Backend Developer to design, implement, and improve robust backend APIs in collaboration with AI research.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and optimize REST and GraphQL endpoints for scalable APIs
• Ensure data validation, strong error handling, and API security best practices
• Plan and execute database migrations, performance optimizations, and schema changes
• Test AI-powered models using Cursor, and report findings via incident reports, bug traces, and screenshots
• Participate in 4-day intensive testing bursts to evaluate how AI models impact real coding workflows
• Collaborate with the research team via a dedicated Slack channel
• Provide post-burst surveys with insights on model performance and developer experience

Requirements

• 3+ years professional experience as a backend developer, with strong Java expertise
• Proficient building and maintaining RESTful and GraphQL APIs
• Advanced knowledge of backend data validation, error handling, and API security
• Hands-on experience with database migrations, performance tuning, and schema design
• Extensive use of AI tools for coding; Cursor familiarity is highly desirable
• Strong written and verbal communication, especially incident/bug reporting
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, remote, collaborative environment

Preferred Qualifications

• Visible open-source contributions (e.g., GitHub stars or contributions)
• Experience designing/evaluating experimental tooling and developer workflows
• Demonstrated enthusiasm for AI advancements in software development
