About the role

Role Overview

Java Backend Developer to support a large-scale federal technology modernization initiative. You will work in a cross-functional Agile (Scrum) team building and maintaining containerized backend microservices in an AWS cloud-native environment.

Responsibilities

Participate in Agile ceremonies and peer code reviews; contribute to CI/CD pipeline work.
Design and implement backend microservices and REST APIs in Java using established architectural patterns.
Develop, test, and maintain backend services; support independent delivery on well-scoped tasks.
Design and optimize PostgreSQL schemas and write efficient SQL queries/data access layers.
Integrate services with Elasticsearch/OpenSearch for search indexing and with AWS S3 for storage.
Implement event-driven messaging using AWS SNS and AWS SQS.
Build and deploy containerized services using Docker on AWS Elastic Container Service (ECS).
Contribute to Python backend components/scripts when required.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a related field (or 3 years additional experience).
3+ years of professional backend web development experience.
Hands-on production backend development in Java.
Proficiency in Python for backend development or scripting.
Experience with PostgreSQL (designing, querying, optimizing).
Experience with Elasticsearch or OpenSearch.
Experience building containerized microservices with Docker.
Working knowledge of AWS services including ECS, RDS, S3, SNS, SQS.
Experience with GitLab (or equivalent) for source control and CI/CD.
Familiarity with Terraform (or similar IaC).
Ability to write and maintain unit and integration tests.
Strong communication skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Security / Compliance

Must be eligible for a Public Trust clearance and comply with safeguarding requirements, including handling Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI).

Nice-to-Haves

Active contribution to domain analysis/design discussions led by senior engineers (implied through collaboration focus).
