About the role
Role Overview
Java Backend Developer to support a large-scale federal technology modernization initiative. You will work in a cross-functional Agile (Scrum) team building and maintaining containerized backend microservices in an AWS cloud-native environment.
Responsibilities
- Participate in Agile ceremonies and peer code reviews; contribute to CI/CD pipeline work.
- Design and implement backend microservices and REST APIs in Java using established architectural patterns.
- Develop, test, and maintain backend services; support independent delivery on well-scoped tasks.
- Design and optimize PostgreSQL schemas and write efficient SQL queries/data access layers.
- Integrate services with Elasticsearch/OpenSearch for search indexing and with AWS S3 for storage.
- Implement event-driven messaging using AWS SNS and AWS SQS.
- Build and deploy containerized services using Docker on AWS Elastic Container Service (ECS).
- Contribute to Python backend components/scripts when required.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field (or 3 years additional experience).
- 3+ years of professional backend web development experience.
- Hands-on production backend development in Java.
- Proficiency in Python for backend development or scripting.
- Experience with PostgreSQL (designing, querying, optimizing).
- Experience with Elasticsearch or OpenSearch.
- Experience building containerized microservices with Docker.
- Working knowledge of AWS services including ECS, RDS, S3, SNS, SQS.
- Experience with GitLab (or equivalent) for source control and CI/CD.
- Familiarity with Terraform (or similar IaC).
- Ability to write and maintain unit and integration tests.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Security / Compliance
- Must be eligible for a Public Trust clearance and comply with safeguarding requirements, including handling Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI).
Nice-to-Haves
- Active contribution to domain analysis/design discussions led by senior engineers (implied through collaboration focus).
