About the role

Role Overview

Join GitLab as an Intermediate Site Reliability Engineer focused on Environment Automation. You’ll help maintain the reliability, scalability, security, and consistency of isolated GitLab customer environments and collaborate with senior SREs to automate infrastructure across the full lifecycle.

Key Missions

  • Contribute to the design and evolution of infrastructure automation using Terraform, Ansible, and Kubernetes to provision, upgrade, and operate many GitLab environments with minimal manual effort.
  • Debug and resolve production issues across Kubernetes clusters, GitLab components, and cloud services, and build automation and protections to prevent recurrence.
  • Participate in on-call rotations for production GitLab environments, helping triage and mitigate incidents across clusters and cloud providers.

Requirements

  • Familiarity with infrastructure automation and configuration management tools, especially Terraform and Ansible (modules, variables, and safe multi-environment state management).
  • Proactive mindset focused on automation and documentation: removing manual steps, improving runbooks, and turning repetitive work into reliable self-service tooling.
  • Comfortable working asynchronously with distributed teams and aligning with GitLab values of collaboration, transparency, and iteration.
  • Experience with distributed systems and/or cloud production environments; comfortable participating in incident response and on-call under senior guidance.
  • Experience as an SRE or in a similar operations role, with interest in automating the lifecycle of many environments/tenants in parallel.
  • Hands-on experience running Kubernetes workloads in production, including understanding deployments/rollouts and debugging issues like crash loops, failed health checks, and scheduling problems.
  • Solid understanding of Git-based workflows and Infrastructure as Code practices; ability to contribute reusable modules, templates, and pipelines.
  • Hands-on backend programming experience, especially Go (Golang), to read/understand/modify infrastructure tooling.

Nice to Have / Additional Notes

  • GitLab encourages candidates with varying experience levels to apply; you don’t need to meet every qualification to be considered.
