About the role

Role Overview

Own and enhance the employee benefits function while building scalable infrastructure for a high-performing HR benefits team. Serve as the subject matter expert for benefits administration, compliance, and employee experience across a multi-state organization.

Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end administration of employee benefits programs across 30+ states
  • Manage health and welfare benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and voluntary benefits
  • Own 401(k) administration: accurate retirement plan administration, non-discrimination testing, audits, and regulatory compliance
  • Partner with payroll to ensure correct deductions, enrollments, qualifying life events handling, and reconciliation
  • Oversee leave administration including FMLA, ADA accommodations, short-term disability, long-term disability, and applicable state leave programs
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations across multiple jurisdictions
  • Manage relationships with brokers, retirement plan advisors, and third-party administrators; negotiate plan design and control costs to improve service
  • Analyze benefit utilization, market trends, and employee feedback to recommend enhancements
  • Translate complex plan terms into clear, employee-friendly communications
  • Develop scalable processes, documentation, and internal controls to support future team growth
  • Act as the primary point of contact for benefits questions and escalated issues

Requirements

  • 7+ years of progressive HR benefits experience with ownership of end-to-end benefits administration
  • Experience supporting a multi-state workforce across 30+ states
  • Deep knowledge of medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and voluntary benefit plans
  • Strong 401(k) administration expertise (compliance, non-discrimination testing, annual reporting, vendor management)
  • Experience administering FMLA, ADA, short-term disability, long-term disability, and state leave programs
  • Strong understanding of ERISA, COBRA, HIPAA, ACA, and other applicable benefits regulations
  • Demonstrated payroll partnership for accurate benefit processing and compliance
  • Ability to influence brokers/benefit providers on pricing, plan design, and service
  • Strong communication skills to simplify complex benefits for employees and leadership
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and project management skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience stabilizing and improving under-managed benefits programs
  • Ownership mindset focused on accuracy and compliance for critical programs (especially the 401(k))
  • Comfort introducing structure and sustainable processes
  • Experience influencing brokers/insurers on pricing and service expectations
  • Experience building or expanding an internal benefits function and mentoring team members
