Head of Engineering (Data Platform)

Role overview

Lead the Engineering team responsible for Clover Health’s Data Platform, setting technical strategy, writing code, and guiding a small group of engineers. The work will transform healthcare technology by building an AI-native data platform and improving platform capabilities for autonomous data access.

Responsibilities

• Own the data platform architecture and set strategic direction for the platform’s tooling and roadmap.
• Develop a clear view of the platform’s current state, identify high-impact opportunities, and implement meaningful improvements.
• Design the data platform for an AI-native organization, including data systems and pipelines that support LLM applications and agentic workflows.
• Lead and operationalize a small engineering team, increasing their impact and effectiveness.
• Partner with business stakeholders and lead delivery for your team.
• Drive an actionable approach to governance: document what matters, automate what can be automated, and avoid governance as a bottleneck.

Requirements

• Shipped AI-backed data systems and pipelines serving LLM applications, agentic workflows in data operations, or AI tooling that materially changed team capabilities.
• Deep, hands-on engineering experience with Snowflake and dbt.
• Strong ability to think critically about AI’s reliability and how it changes data platform needs (beyond using Copilot autocomplete).
• Exceptional communication: clear, direct, concise with technical and non-technical audiences.
• Experience navigating complex, heterogeneous data environments: messy integrations, inconsistent models, and real business logic embedded in pipelines.
• Clear, defensible point of view on data access philosophy (e.g., broad availability of raw data to business users).

Nice to have

• Cross-domain experience building complex data platforms across different business contexts.
• Regulated domain experience (healthcare, financial services, etc.).
• Experience building and developing teams: intentional hiring for gaps and investing in growth.
• Proven operational governance mindset and strong documentation/automation habits.
