Head of Applied AI Engineering

Role Overview

Lead Applied AI Engineering as Head of Applied AI Engineering (Head of AI) at Function Health. You’ll define and execute an AI roadmap, drive advanced research into production, mentor a multidisciplinary AI team, and align AI strategy with business and clinical priorities.

Key Missions

• Define and lead a visionary AI roadmap that drives innovation and integration of research into products.
• Mentor and guide a multidisciplinary AI team, fostering collaboration, innovation, and long-term goal focus.
• Partner with senior leadership and cross-functional teams to align AI strategy with business and clinical priorities.

Responsibilities

• Lead advanced research and applied AI initiatives for healthcare use cases.
• Communicate complex AI concepts to non-technical stakeholders, including executives.
• Collaborate with teams such as product development, regulatory affairs, and marketing to align AI solutions with company direction.

Requirements

• Proven ability to drive AI vision and direction, aligning team goals to organizational objectives.
• Experience building and leading multidisciplinary teams across researchers, data scientists, and engineers.
• Strong technical depth across data science, deep learning, expert systems, generative AI, and machine learning.
• 10+ years of AI/data science expertise, or 5+ years with a relevant PhD.
• Ability to innovate and apply AI creatively to solve complex healthcare problems.
• Commitment to responsible AI in healthcare, including willingness to implement HIPAA and applicable data privacy laws.
• Experience deploying AI on cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP) and/or edge devices.
• Multimodal AI experience integrating imaging, genomics, text, and sensor data.
• Familiarity with health technologies such as Oura, Whoop, Apple Watch, and CGMs (continuous glucose monitors).
• Startup experience is highly valued, especially early engineering hires or founder experience.

• Prior work with health/wellness devices and data pipelines.
• Experience bringing AI research to product in a high-growth, fast-paced environment.
