About the role
Role Overview
Contractor software engineering role (10–12 hours/week, remote) supporting the training and evaluation of next-generation AI systems via real-world engineering tasks. You’ll be expected to reason through unfamiliar codebases, clearly explain engineering decisions, and assess code/architecture quality—no prior AI experience required.
Responsibilities
- Work on challenging tasks across backend, full-stack, systems, and infrastructure projects.
- Review, debug, improve, and explain code in different technical environments.
- Design or evaluate solutions involving:
- APIs, databases, services, integrations
- Testing and deployment workflows
- Evaluate engineering tradeoffs across scalability, maintainability, performance, reliability, security, and developer experience.
- Communicate technical reasoning clearly in writing (why it works, alternatives considered).
- Collaborate with customer teams on technical reviews, implementation decisions, and problem-solving exercises.
- Adapt quickly to new codebases, frameworks, and requirements.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of hands-on software engineering experience.
- Strong experience in at least one backend or full-stack environment, including Go (Golang) and/or others such as Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, Node.js, Java, C#, .NET, C++, Ruby, PHP, or similar.
- Experience building, maintaining, or reviewing production applications, APIs, services, databases, and integrations.
- Strong fundamentals: debugging, testing, code quality, architecture, and technical tradeoff evaluation.
- Ability to explain complex engineering decisions clearly and objectively.
Preferred Qualifications
- Cloud experience: AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- CI/CD and DevOps workflows; containers, monitoring, and production operations.
- Frontend experience with React, Next.js, Angular, Vue, or React Native.
- Open-source work / public GitHub / strong technical writing.
- Experience mentoring engineers, performing code reviews, and making architecture decisions.
