About the role
Role Overview
Contractor software engineer (10–12 hours/week, remote). You will help train and evaluate next-generation AI systems by tackling practical software engineering tasks and demonstrating strong judgment, code reasoning, and clear technical communication. No prior AI experience is required.
Responsibilities
- Work on challenging backend, full-stack, infrastructure, and systems-related engineering tasks
- Review, debug, improve, and clearly explain code across different technical environments
- Design or evaluate solutions involving:
- APIs, databases, services, integrations
- Testing and deployment workflows
- Identify and discuss tradeoffs across scalability, maintainability, performance, reliability, security, and developer experience
- Communicate engineering reasoning clearly in writing (why it works and alternatives considered)
- Collaborate with the customer’s team on technical reviews and implementation decisions
- Adapt quickly to new codebases, frameworks, and technical requirements
Required Skills & Qualifications
- 5+ years of hands-on software engineering experience
- Strong backend or full-stack experience in at least one environment (e.g., Go/Golang, Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, Node.js, Java, C#, .NET, C++, Ruby, PHP)
- Experience building, maintaining, or reviewing production applications, APIs, services, databases, or integrations
- Solid software engineering fundamentals: debugging, testing, code quality, architecture, and technical tradeoffs
- Ability to explain complex engineering decisions clearly and objectively
- Comfortable reading and reasoning through unfamiliar code/requirements
Preferred Qualifications
- Cloud experience: AWS, GCP, or Azure
- CI/CD and DevOps workflows; containers; monitoring; production operations
- Frontend frameworks: React, Next.js, Angular, Vue, or React Native
- Open-source contributions/public GitHub work and strong examples of past engineering
- Experience mentoring, reviewing code, or making architecture decisions
