About the role

Role Overview

Makeway is hiring a Full-Stack Web Developer for a fully remote team. The role focuses heavily on custom WordPress development (themes, plugins, blocks, integrations, performance, security, accessibility, and ongoing support), along with additional work using modern JavaScript frameworks.

Responsibilities

Build, maintain, and improve responsive websites and digital experiences, primarily using WordPress and PHP
Develop custom WordPress themes, plugins, Gutenberg blocks, and Advanced Custom Fields implementations
Create modern front-end interfaces using semantic HTML, CSS/Sass, and JavaScript/TypeScript with frameworks such as React, Vue, or Next.js
Integrate third-party services via REST APIs, webhooks, and other data exchanges
Translate designs into accessible, responsive, maintainable UI
Troubleshoot complex issues across front end, back end, hosting, and connected services
Participate in technical discovery and project scoping (effort estimates, dependencies, risks)
Review code, contribute to shared standards, and use Git-based workflows for release management
Manage work across multiple client projects with clear communication on progress, blockers, and tradeoffs
Collaborate with developers, designers, strategists, and project managers; step in as needed
Use approved AI tools regularly for development, troubleshooting, research, documentation, QA, and workflow improvement—while maintaining judgment and accountability

Requirements

Strong experience with PHP, including object-oriented programming and modern practices
Deep WordPress experience: custom themes/plugins, Gutenberg, Advanced Custom Fields, WordPress data model and APIs
Proficiency in modern front-end development with JavaScript and at least one current framework/library: React, Vue, or Next.js
Strong knowledge of HTML, CSS or Sass, responsive design, and cross-browser implementation
Experience with SQL and relational databases, especially MySQL or MariaDB
Experience integrating REST APIs and webhooks with third-party services

Ability to communicate openly, take ownership, adapt to shifting priorities, and help teammates unblock issues
