About the role
Role Overview
Full-Stack Engineer I (early-career, rotational)
Formant is looking for an ambitious full-stack engineer to improve the platform’s reliability and usability for real customer deployments. The role starts with customer-facing support and reliability work, then gradually shifts toward core product and platform development as you build system context.
Responsibilities
Customer-facing engineering & reliability (initial focus)
- Investigate and resolve high-priority production issues
- Debug across the stack with guidance from senior engineers
- Identify recurring issues and drive systemic fixes (not just one-offs)
Product & platform development
- Build and improve features across the full stack (frontend, backend, infra)
- Improve documentation, runbooks, and onboarding paths for common scenarios
Automation & AI-assisted support
- Help build internal AI tooling (agents/chatbots) for common support workflows
- Improve logs, metrics, and diagnostics to speed up issue detection and resolution
- Proactively reduce support load by improving product and tooling
Ongoing learning
- Explore unfamiliar codebases/technologies as needed
Requirements
- 0–3 years of professional software engineering experience (internships/co-ops/substantial projects count)
- Strong fundamentals in computer science and software design
- Pragmatic engineering judgment: know when to ship the fix vs. refactor
- Comfortable using modern AI-assisted development tools (e.g., coding copilots, LLMs)
- Comfortable with “unsexy” work: legacy code and tricky edge cases
- Calm and communicative under pressure during production issues
- Ownership mindset; follows through on problems
- Evidence of work: GitHub/portfolio (link required)
Nice to Have
- Excitement about accelerating work with AI tools
- Interest in eventually moving toward product engineering, platform engineering, or customer-facing technical roles
Growth & Mentorship
- Work closely with experienced engineers and product leaders
- Get exposure to real production systems early
- Increase ownership over time
Compensation & Benefits
- $110K–$130K salary (depending on experience)
- Equity in a Series A startup
- Benefits and remote flexibility
