Full Stack Engineer - Billings & Subscriptions

Role overview

You’ll join SumUp’s Billing and Subscriptions team, working on the billing engine, merchant wallet, and subscription experiences that power millions of transactions across 37 markets. The team is rebuilding and expanding its platform to support new sales models, market expansion, and financial integrations.

What you’ll do

• Build and maintain backend services and frontend interfaces for billing, contracts, and merchant wallet products.
• Contribute to the refactoring of key billing components to improve reliability, data security, and alignment with the wider payments platform.
• Support the expansion of billing and wallet capabilities into new markets, ensuring localisation requirements are met.
• Participate in a weekly support rotation to handle incoming customer queries and help maintain platform stability.
• Deliver features end-to-end with senior engineers and product managers—from implementation through production.

Requirements

• Solid experience building full-stack applications, with a backend focus.
• Ideally comfortable with Node.js or Go (other backend languages are acceptable).
• Experience with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL/MySQL) and non-relational databases (e.g., DynamoDB, MongoDB, Redis).
• Practical frontend experience with React and Next.js.
• Ability to write clean, typed code in TypeScript or JavaScript.
• Strong English communication skills.
• Pragmatic problem-solving skills: make sensible trade-offs, unblock yourself/others, and write maintainable code.

Nice to have

• Experience improving security and reliability through refactoring of payment/billing systems.
• Experience supporting multi-market/product localisation requirements.
