Full Stack Engineer

Role Overview

Agile Six is seeking a Full Stack Engineer (React/Ruby) to join a cross-functional, self-managed team supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs. You will help build an integrated patient portal experience on VA.gov, improving how Veterans manage health care, community care, disability benefits, and related information.

Responsibilities

• Build accessible, performant, and scalable frontend and backend features using React and Ruby on Rails (and related industry tools).
• Implement user-facing features in React (TypeScript/JavaScript) using USWDS design patterns and VA API/FHIR standards where applicable.
• Deliver 100% automated test coverage (unit, integration, functional, load, accessibility) for all features.
• Integrate with VA APIs and backend services for accurate, secure data rendering and discoverability via the Lighthouse API Hub.
• Support migration and retirement of legacy systems while preserving content and functionality.
• Contribute to healthcare feature development (e.g., secure messaging, medical records, medications) with a focus on interoperability and user-centered design.
• Monitor and triage performance issues daily using Datadog, and respond to incidents per VA severity levels.
• Prevent and resolve silent failures via robust error handling, user notification, and backend transaction validation.
• Participate in pair programming, peer reviews, and blameless post-mortems.
• Continuously integrate and deploy using VA Platform tooling, CI/CD pipelines, and reusable infrastructure components across VA.gov and VA Mobile.
• Uphold Zero Trust security principles; ensure sensitive data is not exposed in source code (publish non-sensitive code to open source).
• Support Agile Six engineering culture through knowledge sharing, mentoring, and internal initiatives.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional engineering experience with in-depth knowledge in at least one front-end and one back-end stack (e.g., Ruby and React).
• 3+ years of recent production experience with React and JavaScript/TypeScript.
• 1+ year of production experience with Ruby on Rails.
• Ability to leverage AI-assisted development tools, specifically GitHub Copilot, to accelerate delivery and improve code quality.

Nice-to-Haves

• Experience integrating with USWDS, VA API, and/or FHIR standards.
• Experience with production incident response and performance monitoring in tooling like Datadog.
