About the role
Role overview
Rackner is hiring a Frontend Software Engineer to build secure, interactive frontend features for a mission-planning and decision-support platform supporting a Department of Defense customer. You will turn complex mission and technical information into clear, responsive user experiences, integrating with backend services and APIs.
Responsibilities
- Build interactive frontend features using React and TypeScript
- Translate complex mission/technical information into clear, usable workflows
- Connect UI components to APIs and backend services
- Support data-rich, map-based, and decision-support application features
- Present application data and AI-enabled outputs in ways users can understand and act on
- Write maintainable, testable code that meets functional and security requirements
- Develop unit and integration tests for application features
- Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and security remediation
- Document workflows, design decisions, and technical changes
- Collaborate with backend, AI/ML, security, DevSecOps, and customer engineering teams
- Attend onsite sprint planning approximately every six weeks at a customer facility in Laurel, Maryland
Requirements
- 4+ years of software development experience
- Hands-on experience building modern frontend applications
- React and TypeScript experience
- Experience integrating user interfaces with APIs/backends
- Understanding of component-based development, application state, and data flow
- Git-based development and secure software development practices
- Ability to write and test clear, maintainable code
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field
Nice to have (strengthens fit)
- Geospatial/mapping experience (e.g., Cesium / CesiumJS)
- Experience with map-based/spatial/data-visualization applications
- OpenShift/Kubernetes and containerized environments
- GitLab and secure CI/CD workflows
- API development experience with FastAPI/Flask/Python
- Automated testing and vulnerability remediation
- Defense/aerospace/command-and-control/mission-planning software experience
- Frontend integration of AI-assisted recommendations/decision support
Other important details
- Primarily remote (US-based), using customer-provided systems
- Onsite sprint planning in Laurel, Maryland about every six weeks
- Contingent on contract award and final customer approval
- Anticipated start date: November 2026
