You’ll join Gusto’s Core Experience team to build AI-native experiences through Gus, Gusto’s AI-powered assistant. This is a full-stack staff-level role where you own projects end-to-end—from specs to deployed features—at the intersection of modern AI capabilities and real business needs.
Responsibilities
- Architect, build, and test technologies that support AI experiences across Gusto’s product suite
- Create standardized, self-serve patterns enabling product teams to extend Gus across web, voice, email, and agent-based experiences
- Collaborate with ML and product teams on prompt engineering, clarifying question flows, and escalation logic, using A/B tests and data to improve outcomes
- Mentor engineers on complex technical challenges involving AI, scalability, and platform infrastructure
- Help scale a large Ruby/Rails + React application serving millions of users
- Work cross-functionally with Product, Design, Security, and Technical Operations to deliver customer-facing features
- Deliver customer-facing products end-to-end with strong ownership of performance, reliability, and quality
Requirements
- 8+ years software development experience; 4+ years building scalable platforms or high-impact customer-facing products
- Strong front-end and modern web foundation with ability to build maintainable code using Ruby on Rails, React, GraphQL, or similar full-stack frameworks
- Proven track record owning multi-quarter projects that solve complex problems and deliver measurable customer impact
- Experience with internal platforms / developer-facing infrastructure enabling teams to self-serve and ship
- Excellent cross-functional communication and mentoring ability
- Product-minded engineering approach with ownership of outcomes
Nice to have
- Experience building AI platform systems (e.g., orchestration, evals, prompt systems)—not necessarily ML model development
- Strong learning orientation toward AI technologies and patterns
