About the role
Role Overview
Frontend Engineer at Tailscale (fully remote; US-based). You’ll help define and build the next-generation web console and shared frontend infrastructure for multiple Tailscale products, with a special focus on identity-adjacent frontend systems.
Responsibilities
- Own the frontend architecture for the next-generation console (app structure, routing, state boundaries, shared abstractions, maintainability)
- Design and maintain cross-origin authentication and session infrastructure (auth flows, CORS, CSRF protections, cookie/session strategy, multi-environment support)
- Build and operate a frontend serving platform to host multiple products under a unified development workflow
- Establish shared infrastructure, conventions, and design patterns that unify distinct product experiences
- Create frontend patterns/tooling that help non-frontend engineers ship accessible, production-quality UI safely
- Partner with Product Design to translate complex identity/infrastructure concepts into intuitive UX
- Collaborate across teams (Growth, Design, Product, Engineering) on experimentation and iteration (including A/B testing, analytics instrumentation, feature rollouts)
- Define/improve the frontend testing strategy (integration, end-to-end, dev ergonomics, abstractions to reduce testing complexity)
- Improve local development workflows and pipelines (preview deployments, release ergonomics, operational reliability)
- Raise the frontend engineering quality bar via technical leadership, reviews, mentoring, and platform guardrails
- Participate in an on-call rotation every few weeks to triage and mitigate incidents
Requirements
- Deep experience building and operating production React applications at scale
- Strong web platform fundamentals: HTTP semantics, browser security boundaries, authentication flows, cookies/storage, CORS, CSRF
- Experience building internal platforms/frameworks/shared libraries enabling other teams to ship with strong guardrails
- Ability to drive a unified console/platform vision across disparate codebases
- Strong judgment in frontend architecture
Nice-to-haves (implied by focus)
- Experience with authentication/session integration across multiple services
- Experience improving developer tooling and preview/release workflows
- Experience with analytics instrumentation and experimentation tooling
