Frontend Engineer (React.js, UX)

Role Overview

Senior Staff Software Engineer on Stripe’s Merchant Experience team, partnering with Product, Design, AI/ML, and Infrastructure to shape how merchants interact with Stripe Dashboard and related interfaces. The role focuses on improving quality, performance, reliability, and UX—especially through AI-enabled merchant workflows.

Responsibilities

• Define and execute technical strategy for merchant-facing experiences, emphasizing quality, performance, and AI integration.
• Lead complex, cross-team projects to improve reliability, responsiveness, and polish of merchant surfaces.
• Set engineering standards, tooling, and processes to ensure high-quality, high-performance UI by default.
• Drive performance improvements using instrumentation, architectural enhancements, and speed optimizations.
• Innovate on merchant UX by exploring and prototyping AI-driven features for discovery, configuration, and operational workflows.
• Build scalable frontend platforms/frameworks/components and developer tools to boost productivity and enforce best practices.
• Collaborate with Product, Design, AI/ML, and Infrastructure to translate vision into technical roadmaps.
• Mentor and develop engineering talent and strengthen a culture of craftsmanship and continuous improvement.

Requirements

• 10–15+ years of software engineering experience building large-scale, user-facing web applications.
• Proven track record leading large-scale, cross-functional engineering projects with broad impact.
• Deep expertise in modern frontend development, especially React, plus strong full-stack skills.
• Strong performance engineering experience: profiling, instrumentation, and optimization.
• Experience deploying/maintaining web apps at global scale (CDN, build tooling, browser compatibility).
• Familiarity with distributed systems, API design, and platform/infrastructure development.
• Exceptional communication skills; can articulate technical vision to engineers, product managers, and executives.
• Experience with design systems / component libraries / frontend platform infrastructure.
• Hands-on experience integrating AI capabilities into user-facing products.
• Ability to influence technical direction and align teams without formal authority.
• Passion for developer experience and mentoring senior engineers.
• Understanding of the intersection of AI and UX.
