Founding Product Designer

Role Overview

Founding Product Designer at GovWell, responsible for keeping the product coherent and usable as the platform scales. You’ll define shared interaction patterns, terminology, workflow foundations, and a design system so teams can move quickly without fragmenting the user experience.

Missions / Responsibilities

• Ensure product coherence and usability as the platform evolves by defining reusable interaction models, reference workflows, and design systems.
• Partner closely with Product Management to sequence the UX roadmap/strategy and ensure initiatives across teams integrate into a consistent user experience.
• Design key end-to-end government workflows, understanding how public-sector staff operate across domains such as permits, inspections, licenses, planning, and payments.
• Work with product management and engineering to shape core workflows and simplify the experience for government users.

Requirements

• Systems-level product design experience: proven ability to define reusable interaction patterns, workflow primitives, and design systems that prevent fragmentation at scale.
• 5+ years designing complex, workflow-heavy SaaS products, owning end-to-end flows across interconnected surfaces (not just isolated screens).
• Strong product judgment and a bias toward simplicity; identify high-leverage usability/coherence problems and reduce complexity in high-stakes operational software.
• Highly fluent in AI-native design and prototyping workflows, using modern AI tools to explore ideas quickly, validate workflows, and unblock engineering with lightweight design assets.
• Demonstrated ability to design and ship quickly alongside empowered engineers; create design foundations that scale across teams.

Nice-to-haves

• Interest or experience in govtech / public-sector workflows.
• Ability to learn complex operational domains quickly.

Location

Role is described as full remote, but also mentions a hybrid role based in New York City.
