About the role
Role: Field Maintenance Technician (CTC-LIS)
Reporting to the 2IC Field Services, the Field Maintenance Technician supports maintenance activities to ensure ongoing availability of Combat Training Centre – Live Instrumentation System (CTC-LIS) equipment.
This hands-on role involves preparing, deploying, and maintaining CTC-LIS Relay Stations, including fault diagnosis and repairs of telecommunications equipment, plus servicing diesel-powered generators. The role requires significant time deployed away from Townsville.
Responsibilities
- Conduct inspections, maintenance, and repairs of CTC-LIS instrumentation and telemetry equipment.
- Diagnose and repair telecommunications equipment including UHF, microwave, and LTE systems.
- Perform pre-deployment readiness checks for telemetry and mechanical equipment.
- Maintain CTC-LIS equipment during field deployments.
- Service and perform minor repairs to diesel-powered generators.
- Provide technical advice during instrumentation function checking phases.
- Deputise for the 2IC Field Services when required.
- Step into a leadership role within a small team during deployments when needed.
About You / Requirements
- Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively in both field and workshop environments.
- Confident working in dynamic conditions, prioritising maintenance issues, and communicating clearly.
- Comfortable using IT systems and programs.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Background/experience in the installation and maintenance of communications systems.
- Basic knowledge of electronics and electrical principles.
Qualifications & Compliance
- Certificate III in Telecommunications, Electrotechnology, or comparable qualification.
- Clean Heavy Truck Licence (or willingness to obtain).
- Vehicle Loading Crane high risk licence (or willingness to obtain).
- Work at Heights qualification (or willingness to obtain).
- Forklift licence (or willingness to obtain).
- Successful National Police Check.
- Ability to obtain and hold an Australian Government Security Vetting Agency security clearance.
Working Environment
- Significant deployment time across various Australian Army and non-Defence training areas.
- During exercise phases, work in a small team providing 24-hour maintenance coverage.
- From time to time, may need to monitor/respond to communications outside ordinary working hours to support critical issues.
